xAI’s Grok 3 comes to Microsoft Azure

Microsoft has become one of the first hyperscalers to offer managed access to Grok, an AI model developed by Elon Musk's xAI startup. Available through Microsoft's Azure AI Foundry platform, Grok 3 and Grok 3 mini models will have service-level agreements and be billed directly by Microsoft. Grok, which powers features on Musk's social network X, has been the subject of controversy, with reports showing it would undress photos of women, censor unflattering mentions of Trump and Musk, and repeatedly refer to white genocide in South Africa.

Trump to sign bill criminalizing revenge porn and explicit deepfakes

President Trump is set to sign the Take It Down Act, a bipartisan law that criminalizes the distribution of non-consensual explicit images, including deepfakes and revenge porn. The bill requires social media companies and platforms to remove such material within 48 hours of notice from the victim and delete duplicate content. The bill, sponsored by Senators Ted Cruz and Amy Klobuchar, is the first time federal regulators impose restrictions on internet companies.

Microsoft wants to tap AI to accelerate scientific discovery

Microsoft has announced Microsoft Discovery, a platform that uses agentic AI to accelerate scientific discovery. The platform can handle science-related workloads end-to-end, from scientific knowledge reasoning to hypothesis formulation, candidate generation, and simulation and analysis. Microsoft is among many AI labs that believe AI can accelerate scientific discovery, particularly in medicine. However, many researchers don't consider AI useful in guiding the scientific process due to its unreliability. AI systems designed for science have so far been mostly underwhelming, with results being mostly underwhelming. Google's GNoME AI system synthesized around 40 new materials in 2023, but an outside analysis found none were new.
